Yesterday we witnessed the most unfair, confusing and discriminatory election landscape in nearly half of a century: polling place-closures in North Carolina; last-minute interpretations to photo ID laws in Alabama that exclude public housing IDs; long lines in Florida and North Carolina; problems with voting machines in Texas; inaccuracies on voting rolls in Georgia and Pennsylvania; tens of thousands of calls made to the election protection hotline; inconsistent implementation of the voter ID law in Texas; enforcement of non-existent voter ID law in Missouri (!!!), and the list goes on. SCOTUS paved the way for yesterday by gutting the Voting Rights Act. Unless Congress passes the bipartisan, sensible, and forward-looking Voting Rights Amendment Act -- the confusion, chaos, and suppression we saw yesterday will become the new normal for voters everywhere.
