Yesterday, you reminded us that you used to be in a gang of four. Yesterday, you were the sole survivor of that group of four, feline, family members; and yesterday, because they had all recently passed away, you were the king of the house. Yesterday, you were the Top Cat. Yesterday, you were a 17 year old kitten who was only just starting to act his age. The yesterdays are great because they were filled with you, and your brothers and sisters silly antics. Yesterday, and all the previous yesterdays, you used to keep the whole house entertained, you made this a fun house; a home filled with love, comfort and purring - even from the dog. Its tomorrow that concerns us. Tomorrow, were not going to be greeted by a soft meow from a furry, green eyed face. Tomorrow, were not going to get tripped up by a cat making figure of eight around our feet. Tomorrow, were not going to hear an explicably loud purr coming from a sleeping cat that has pushed the dog away from the prime position in front of the fire. Tomorrow, were not going to have hover around a cat that showed no fear towards the vacuum cleaner. Tomorrow, were not going to have to step over a big, black, furry mass that has decided to plonk itself in the middle of the kitchen floor to have a quick nap. Tomorrow, were not going to find an imprint of a cats face against the patio window, an imprint so vivid that it displayed the passion that you, and your other feline siblings, had for all the things that were feathered in the garden and the deep desire that you all shared to have a go at them. Tomorrow, were not going to find a fly without wings spinning on the living room floor. Likewise, tomorrow were not going to find a spider with just one leg making endless circles in the garage. Tomorrow, were not going to catch anyone sharpening their claws on the wallpaper; nor are we going to discover a freshly plucked hole in the new carpet; and tomorrow, were not going to find a cats stray claw in the new said carpet. Tomorrow, were not going to have to sprint at speed to retrieve, carry, and assist any feline that is threatening to cough up a world record sized fur-ball up onto the couch. Tomorrow, we may get the couch to ourselves, but we wont enjoy it. Tomorrow, were not going to share the last bit of milk from the bottom of our cornflakes bowls with a begging cat and its impatient paw. Tomorrow, were not going to find the net curtains, or the bedroom blinds, rearranged by a feline so that they may gain easy access for the purpose of window gazing. Tomorrow, were not going to have to clean cat fur from the computer desk, nor are we going to try and decipher the unintelligible message that that individual left us on the monitor when they fell asleep on the keyboard. Tomorrow, were no longer going to be entertained by a startled cat that is spooked by its own farts. Tomorrow, were not going to wake up and be greeted by friendly cats nose only inches away from our face. Tomorrow, our laps will no longer be warmed by a lazy cats arse. Tomorrow, were going to be able to walk around the house in just our bare feet, safe in the knowledge that our toes are no longer fair game to any hidden, stalking predator. Tomorrow, we can eat whole length spaghetti by ourselves without finding a greedy cat, eagerly devouring the other end of it like a scene from cute 1960s Disney cartoon. Tomorrow, we wont be able to play formation cat herding, with the aid of a laser-pen and its hypnotic, uncatchable red-dot point. Tomorrow, we will grieve; because, tomorrow we will miss you, my dear little friend. Tomorrow we will feel empty and experience the silent void of a cat free house; and tomorrow the only thing that will raise a smile on our lips is by recalling all the yesterdays when you, and your siblings, once existed. Goodnight and sleep well our little boy. R.I.P Denny. (1997 - 2014)
