She probably felt that in order to make it, her dream, she felt she had to compromise some part of her self-esteem, dignity or whatever; possibly even her look. She probably felt that in order to make it, she would have to change some fundamental part of herself that would make her more acceptable to mainstream media and the world. Especially for a dark girl, she would have to lighten or whiten her appearance. Then here comes Lupita Nyongo, who is grace, beauty, intelligence and unabashadely proud of her beautiful dark skin. Now the young girl sees that she does NOT have to change her dreams or herself. That her INITIAL dreams are VALID because the world is saying that this midnight colored woman IS beautiful. This midnight colored woman IS intelligent. This midnight colored woman IS respected and she did not have to change ANYTHING about herself to get all of that. THAT is how I see this image.
