You are not going to like my position… I believe that wage labor capitalism is designed to consume you—it is a system that has taught you to labor until you die, to work away your time, energy, and attention in a project to be productive. There is no escape. But there is refuge. In the pleasure of intimacy, in the secrets shared between friends, in the affections of family, and in satisfaction of being on the same wavelength, we find refuge. Because those brief, passing moments of connection, are all that we really have—they make life worth living. Because without persons, without support, without life, you will die. Literally, you will die of exhaustion, of hypertension, or of suicide. And because I’m not ready to die and because I’ve grown past the phase of adolescence when death seemed appealing, I am ready to live.
