You know, I appreciate that I live in a time when atheists are empowered to defend their lack of belief (it was getting lonely out here) but I have to say that some of them are real lumps. I mean, Ive been an atheist all my long life, and a rationalist and even a wee little bit of a materialist (ask my friends!), but I always assumed that just meant I dont believe in your God or anybody elses or any of the obvious Freudian bullshit out of which we construct our various Heavens and Hells. Hell, as a jack Buddhist I dont even believe in reincarnation. But I do believe in just about everything else--or at least admit the possibility--including the likelihood that none of this is really happening. Our Gods are designed to pander to our feelings of mortality and helplessness. The universe wasnt made with us in mind nor does it feel any obligation to make sense. So it makes sense to be dazzled, mystified, terrified, freaked out and blown away. After all, every question answered generates a thousand more that havent been and maybe cant be, and there are things well never understand until we evolve into creatures who can. Buy the ticket, said the good doctor (not THAT doctor), take the ride.
