You know, I have to say that Im with John on this one. The - TopicsExpress

You know, I have to say that Im with John on this one. The distinct advantage that the furguson case had over this one is that there was enough ambiguity that some of use had the luxary of sticking out heads in the sand and playing dumb. Some of us even had the tiny remote moral island of being able to say things like, he shouldnt have broken the law. More than that, we could say things like that and have a shred of chance of being right. New York however, is a much bigger slice of a much more rancid pie. This wasnt produced in a movie studio, it wasnt a scripted hoax, we didnt imagine or misinterpret what we say here. It was an unprovoked attack on a civilian by a group of police officers that result in the death of an unarmed, non-aggressive man who was screaming that he couldnt breathe. He was screaming for his life. And at this point, murder isnt an opinion! Its been ruled homicide by a coroner! And almost more horrifying than no indictment from a grand jury, is that no on helped him! No one rushed to this mans aid! And why would they really?? Weve already established, not only in the Mike Brown case, but in several cases that the police are without a doubt above the law they claim to serve and will hurt you without consequence. Who is jumping in line to be the next victim on the coroners table? But heres the point: we have allowed it to get this way. And now it wont ever change. We let it get this way with legislations like the patriot act. We let it get this way when we ridiculed protesters. We let it get this way when we condemned rioters. We let it get this way when we dont flood police departments and city halls with angry letters and phone calls. We let it get this way when we make it about race and then claim its not our problem because we are the right color. We let it get this way when we teach our children to trust the police because theyre always here to help and to catch bad people. We let it get this way when we decided it wouldnt happen to us and it was someone elses problem; that it was an issue in someone elses city. These arent images of some far off third world dictator ruled country that we are seeing, for Christs sake! These are here at home! Its not a foreign threat! Its in our backyards now! Its on our streets. This doesnt affect strangers or even neighbors. It affects us! So what do I do now? I dont feel like its right anymore for my children to have the idea in their heads anymore that the police are alway the good guys.
