You may have noticed a big grey plane at the airport last week which didnt quite match the other ones. This is a United States Air force C17 Globemaster, and was in Christchurch after coming back from Winfly (short for winter fly) down to Antarctica. The guys were delayed from Winfly a few weeks ago due to bad weather, but theyve now managed to get down with extra people to help gear up for the summer season. They do three flights to the ice after the long winter – two loads of passengers and one of cargo – with gear, equipment and fresh produce. Imagine having to wait for fresh milk and eggs– no popping down to the dairy for these guys! The Globemaster has now gone to the states, but will back in NZ in time for Air Day on the 5th October as part of IceFest 2014. Come and see it up close! nzicefest.co.nz/us-antarctic-program-air-day How many of you would like to visit Antarctica in one of these?
