You might think in this wired world that nystagmus researchers all know what everyone else in the field is doing. Not so, as day one of 3rd Nystagmus Network international research workshop showed and our patron, West Brom footballer Steven Reid, saw for himself. The work on eye muscles in Germany and the US was new to many, as were the developments in modelling nystagmus in Switzerland. And the debate about the brain and nystagmus continued long into the evening. One of the NN committee asked delegates the question: when do you think we’ll see a breakthrough in nystagmus research and treatment. The answer was: it will be lots of little breakthroughs over many years – and we’ve had some already. We know much more about nystagmus than we did 30 years ago when the UK NN started. For instance, we have the potential for much quicker and more accurate diagnosis and better patient information. It’s just that it hasn’t yet filtered down to many eye hospitals. On the agenda today are imaging, vision, living with nystagmus and genetics.
