You must have known that cleanliness is next to Godliness and that Allah is pure and accepts only that which is pure. But are you also aware that when you fast the smell of your mouth is what is most loved by Allah? Indeed it is and when you raise your hands in prayers and requests from Allah with that "smelly mouth" He (Allah) hastens to answer your prayers. However, this is not to suggest dirtiness because you are very much allowed to use your fingers to clean your mouth when performing ablution and can use a chewing-stick (which is even rewardable) before ablution. But no using of tooth paste before breaking your fast because most have taste and will vitiate your fast. Allah knows best for He is Wise, All Knowing.
