Young Royals lefty Brandon Finnegan has friend in White Sox prospect Carlos Rodon While No. 3 overall draft pick Carlos Rodon was pitching in the minor leagues, No. 17 pick Brandon Finnegan was helping the Kansas City Royals get to the World Series. For all the talk about Rodon making a fast-track contribution to the Sox in 2014, it was Finnegan — another 21-year-old left-hander — who would make major-league contributions and major headlines. Rodon, Finnegan’s roommate with Team USA, was left with nothing to do baseball-wise but to cheer while watching his pal pitch on the postseason stage. Sox general manager Rick Hahn had said Rodon wasn’t quite ready for the majors, citing some issues with the command of his fastball. In the end, though, the Sox’ brain trust though rest was the best option for Rodon after he had thrown a heavy load of sliders at North Carolina State, then pitched 242/3 innings at three minor-league levels, including Class AAA Charlotte. So instead of picking up a ball in September, Rodon picked up his remote and watched Finnegan get seven extra-inning outs in the Royals’ riveting 9-8 victory in 12 innings against the Oakland Athletics in the American League wild-card game Sept. 30.
