Young Sarah Piggott might have been surprised to know that the one most persistent ripple of her life would be the fact that in 1732 she painstakingly, somewhat hesitantly inscribed her name with a fountain pen she was not particularly good at using in the margin of her favorite book about pirates, and then proceeded to enrich Captain Blackbeard with a fine red coat and golden trim. Nearly three hundred years later, her little book is snugly at home in a spacious, sunlight-flooded archive and graduate students are citing it in dry, interminable dissertations... And each scholar that opens the book is startled by an unexpected splash of vivid color.
