Young said the cameras are visible to people who talk with officers. While officers do not have to tell people they are recording, some do as a courtesy or to ensure their safety. Young said people tend to act more responsibly when they are being watched and recorded. “It makes both parties more responsible, and they’re both being held to the same accountability,” Young said. “People tend to treat people with a little bit more respect when they know a camera is on. It almost forces people to think about their actions, be a little more rational.” The goals of the program are to reduce use-of-force incidents and public complaints as well as raise public trust in police.
