Your child at 5 years can do so many things and is becoming very independent. Social/Emotional Developmental Milestones at this age include - wants to please friends - wants to be like friends - more likely to agree with rules - likes to sing, dance and act - is aware of gender - can tell the difference between whats make believe and whats real - shows more independence - is sometimes demanding and sometimes cooperative What can you do to encourage healthy social/emotional development at this age? - continue to arrange play dates, trips to the park or play groups - your child might start to talk back or use swear words as a way to feel independent. Do not give a lot of attention to this behavior, other than a brief timeout. Instead, praise him when he asks for things nicely and calmly takes no for an answer.
