Your local story of the day.... On my flight home last night, I sat next to a man who was flying from NY to participate in RAGBRAI. He was asking all sorts of questions about where Rock Valley was from Sioux Falls, how small was it etc. When we landed I saw that he was standing around, trying to catch a ride to Rock Valley so I told him I would get him as far as Canton which was more than halfway. He graciously took me up on my offer. As we were heading towards Canton and I was trying to figure out whether or not to just take him all the way to Rock Valley and back, or where the best place would be to leave him, I realized that he had three days until he needed to be in Rock Valley so why not see the best of what Canton has to offer. I offered to take him out to Newton Hills. As we chatted and traveled along, I kept telling him that when he woke up he would be in a beautiful area and that I hoped he found some time to enjoy the park. I couldnt think of anywhere comparable to enjoy a refreshing morning outdoors. As he hugged me and thanked me profusely, I left him at the park. When I pulled out of the parking lot, I reflected on my memories of my youth when I used to ride my bike out here almost every weekend, I tried to think of the last time I actually spent some time at this incredible place that is in Cantons backyard. I am embarrassed to say it has been years. Let this be your reminder to stop and enjoy the things in life that are right in your back yard because the days, months and years slip away from you. I hope my new friend enjoys his stay in one of the most peaceful parks in the state. As I travel and take pictures of skylines everywhere, I need to get on my bike and take my camera and take in the beauty that God put in our neighborhood. Enjoy your day.
