Youth Services International Job Description Job Title: Sergeant Department: Security Reports To: Lieutenant/Shift Supervisor FLSA Status: Nonexempt Prepared By: Paulding Regional Youth Detention Center Prepared Date: 02-12-2001 Approved By: Youth Services International Approved Date: Summary Supervise youth and JCO II and I staff in a correctional training school setting. To ensure the safety, security, health and welfare of youth’s assigned to the facility are provided for. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversees the JCO I and JCO II staff and ensures all POST Orders of the facility are being followed Observes youth in rooms to assure youth well-being and adherence to regulations and rules Assists in writing security, custody and disciplinary policy and procedures Inspects for cleanliness and sanitation of Pod and youth rooms Ensures that proper documentation is completed and given to supervisors Conducts one on one interactions with youth and provides them with sound and timely feedback regarding their behavior and day to day performance in the program Ensures that the facility’s Behavior Management System is being implemented fairly and properly with all youth Provides crisis intervention for youth Assists Lieutenants with reviewing and monitoring security practices and procedures to ensure youth accountability Works effectively with other staff pooling resources and knowledge to make sure that security is maintained and the needs of the youth are provided for Responds to critical and potentially volatile situations and maintains control of all youth involved in the situation Participates in Supervisory meetings as scheduled Is involved with proper training of the JCO II and I staff. Instructs and leads by example the proper policy and procedures of the facility. Performs other related work as required Qualifications Eligibility for certification as a juvenile correctional officer by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council. Applicants must meet the standards prescribed by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to youth, departmental staff and other staff of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus naturally or with correctable lenses. Must be able to perform Use of Force techniques taught in the Mandate Class. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or numb conditions, outside weather conditions and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but on occasions may be high.
