Zais names ex-deputy to John de la Howe School AP , Associated Press Jul. 8, 2014 1:01 PM ET COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — State Education Superintendent Mick Zais has appointed his former deputy who lost in last months primary to a new position overseeing South Carolinas public residential school for troubled teens. The state Board of Education could vote Wednesday whether to confirm Meka Childs appointment as chief operating officer of the John de la Howe School in McCormick. The Legislature created the new position in a compromise for improving the embattled school. The House had wanted to temporarily put the Department of Juvenile Justice in charge. The State newspaper reported (bit.ly/1jbKkq4 ) Childs will receive $8,000 monthly for about four months in the temporary job. Zais endorsed Childs in her campaign for his job when he did not seek a second term. But she placed sixth in the eight-way Republican primary last month.
