David provides excellent consumer tips to help protect people from falling prey to scam artists out there calling themselves locksmiths. Tippi almost got taken today trying to help out a friend from church who had locked her keys in her car. The dispatcher told her it would cost $15 for the service call fee and usually about $35 for the unlock charge. Confused, Tippi asked what the total would be? The lady said probably about $35. When the guy got there, he told my wife it would be $120! She said she only had $60 to pay and that she understood it would be between $35 and $50. After much arguing, he accepted the $60 she had, but wanted another $20 sent to his home address. When I got there and saw his unmarked truck and no uniform, I asked to see his license and insurance. Guess what? He said he was an "apprentice" and had no knowledge of either! Do NOT let these people bully you to extort money from you. Get a firm cost and credentials up front!
