a couple days ago i emailed the Poplar Pipeline Response page and asked them if it were true that they would only be able to clean up a small portion of the oil that was spilled into the river. i thought you all might be interested in their response. the following is the email i received. i am NOT happy with the thought of a 30% recovery! Good evening Peggy- Thank you for your question. I understand your concern abut the amount of oil that will be recovered, especially given the challenging conditions and the importance of the environment to the people who call this area home. The Incident Commander from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Paul Peronard made a comment at both the County Commissioners meeting and the City Council meeting referencing a 30% to 50% recovery rate for a typical oil spill to water. Given the ice and winter conditions for this spill, he expects the percentage to be lower than a typical spill. I can assure you that Bridger Pipelines is committed to recovering as much oil as possible and minimizing the environmental impact caused by this spill. We know that about 50,000 gallons of oil is \at risk\ in this incident. We recovered about 10,000 gallons of oil from the damaged section of the line on Tuesday. That\s about 20% of the oil known to be in the pipeline at the time of the breach. We expect to get some more oil out of the pipeline in the next few days. We are also recovering oil through slots carved into the ice at several locations and collecting oil on the open water when we see it. All of us at Bridger Pipeline regret the inconvenience and concern this incident has caused the people of Glendive and Dawson County. While I don\t know how much oil we will ultimately recover, we will do every thing we can to collect as much of it as possible and reduce the impact the environment along the river. Best regards, Bill Salvin, Public Information Officer Bridger Pipelines
