a great deal of my education after high school involved fungi, not only basidiomycetes, but other fungi and yeasts as well. ONE huge factor in replanting clear cut forests is the absence of mycorrhizal fungi formerly part of the subterranean network of the forest root system. The fungi increase the surface area of the roots thousands of times, assist in the uptake of certain minerals and break down detritus for recycling the nutrients.
