a lekythos is a vessel used to hold oil for funerary services - TopicsExpress

a lekythos is a vessel used to hold oil for funerary services during the Greek Classical Period. Typically, this oil would be used to anoint the bodies of the recently deceased. This particular scene is titled Warrior Taking Leave of his Wife (c. 440 BC). Seen here holding his shield, the warrior seems to be handing his helmet over to his wife. If this is the case, perhaps it was the helmet-less warrioring that eventually necessitated the lekythos. #10000yearsofart
