** a privately shared statement by female anonymous Poverty. Its when you have to sleep on cardboard boxes atop a hard tile floor because you dont have a bed. Its the heartache you feel when you go to the volunteer doctor and hear him tell you that not only are you malnourished but so is your 18-month-old son. Its in the taste of the expired food you get from the food banks and the looks you from people when they see your child wearing clothes that are too small or have holes worn in them. Its not something you share with people, it is something you hide- like a dirty secret you dont want to get out. Shame. Its that feeling of self-blame and guilt that stirs up in you because of other peoples tendencies to blame you for the position youve found yourself in. She should have known better. Should have been better prepared. In the end, when by the skin of your teeth, youve made it out alive, Poverty rears her ugly head again.
