an important update: please read and join the discussion. Last few days i have been receiving phone calls from ICICI Bank representative seeking information about a friend i have on Facebook. It seems this friend has defaulted on a loan and now ICICI is trying to track her. When I explained to the lady calling that i have no contact with the said friend, she got rude and asked me then how come we were friends and how did my friend gave my number? WHAT??????? ICICI expects me to explain how one of the few thousand peoples who have my mobile number gave my number as a reference, mind you i have done no ref check for this friend, i was not aware if this friend had a loan from ICICI in first place and now the bank is calling and harassing me to track my friend????? Surely this was not the ICICI i began my career in. Actually, it is not just ICICI since i had a similar experience with HDFC with another friend too. These people simply expect you to buckle the moment they threaten you to keep calling til you dont give up and agree to help them. Once you do that they will keep calling, making you kind of a pseudo agent of recovery(unpaid of course) til their purpose is served. So is there a solution?? of course , there is. I took my lawyer friend on a conference call in one instance (boy he was good hehehehe) and in second instance told the lady to stay online while i dial 100. Needless to say she hanged up. But this is not enough, these arm twisting tactics of banks have to stop. They can not bully or harass citizens who have no dues to the bank on the basis of their friendship with defaulters. Banks gave loans to these guys and girls on their own responsibility, now that it has gone bad they can not scurry around to find someone to push the blame on. I am tagging all people whose opinions i value and who i hope would provide some direction on this issue. Also please give your opinion if we should begin a petition to ask RBI to instruct banks to refrain from calling third parties for loan recoveries.
