…and now, a bit of personal reflection: 40 years ago today, November 8, 1974, I purchased my first camera – a Minolta SRT 101. I was a 19 year old college freshman and simply wanted to have something that I felt would be cool to hang around my neck. I had played with my dad’s old 8mm movie camera a little in high school but had never owned a still camera. This single purchase has proven to have changed the direction of my life. At the time, I was attending college with the idea of going into radio broadcasting. I quickly became totally engrossed in photography and soon learned how to process film and make prints. I started to work on the college newspaper and gained shooting experience. By the summer of 1976, I landed a job at the portrait studio that made my high school senior photos working in their dark room. By February of 1977, I was employed at a different portrait studio to work in the darkroom, but was also trained to photograph senior sittings, weddings, families, etc. In 1979 I left Minneapolis for Phoenix and continued to be employed as a portrait photographer. In 1984, after 7 years of photographing primarily 18 year olds, I decided I wanted to photograph a subject I could spend more time at – architecture. Since then, I have specialized only in that subject matter. This has proven to be the perfect fit for my interests, abilities and personality. This journey all started with the purchase of my first camera – 40 years ago today.
