angote plans 150 metric tons sugar plant in Jigawa Posted by: ADEOLA AJAKAIYE, Dutse Dangote Group has concluded plans to establish a sugar production plant with capacity to produce about 150 metric tons of the commodity in Jigawa State. The establishment of the plant is said to be one of the company’s interventions geared at reducing the nation’s dependence on imported finished sugar. Aliko Dangote, president of the group, who made this disclosure, recently, during an economic and investment summit held in Dutse, hinted that the plant is expected to generate over 15,000 direct employments on completion. According to him, the company’s resolve to establish the plant was borne out of the need to complement the developmental strides of the present administration in the state. Dangote also stated that the company’s desire in establishing the plant was as a result of the vast potential of the state in the area of sugarcane cultivation, which makes the sitting of such plant in the state an ideal one. “I will like to disclose that we at Dangote Group are glad to be part of this summit which from what we are told is conceived primarily to attract investment to your young state. “In our view the summit is timely and a welcome development. On our part as a mark of our commitment to the economic development of the state, we have resolved to build a 150 metric tons sugar plant in the state. “The modalities for the take off of the plant is being worked out with the state government, and very soon we hope to start the construction, which on completion is expected to give a direct employment to over 15,000 individuals”, he explained. Shedding light on the proposed plant, Mansur Ahmed, chairman, steering committee of the concluded economic and investment summit, said Dangote’s resolve to establish the plant is one of the dividends of the summit. Ahmed, who is the immediate past director general, Nigeria Infrastructure Concessionary Agency, disclosed to BusinessDay that the move is a practical demonstration of the company to the well being of the state. “The commitment which we got from Alhaji Aliko Dangote, as regard establishing a 150 metric tons sugar plant in the state, is a fall out of the economic and investment summit. “All the modalities for the take off of the plant are being worked out and very soon a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) related to the project is going to be signed between the company and the state government. “The steering committee of the summit is glad with this development because of the impact it is going to have on the state in the area of employment as well as poverty reduction”, he noted.
