(apologies for the rather long post) - Certain musicians seem to completely own particular pieces of music such that all other renditions become unlistenable. Do you agree with this claim? Its certainly a controversial one open for debate. For instance, in my opinion Anne-Sophie Mutter so thoroughly injects herself into all the emotions of the Brahms Violin Concerto such that that all other versions seem lacking in comparison. Every other rendition is either too flamboyant, too sensual, too weak, too strong - not a single soloist captures the spectacularly wide range of emotions of the piece anywhere near as well as Mutter (with a few exceptions, which come close but do not equal this sublime performance). Perhaps some other examples conducive to debate would be the Raimondi/Te Kanawa et. al. Don Giovanni, or the Callas/Gobbi/Bergonzi Tosca.
