at the blast of the whistle, emotions rise, anxieties evolve, tension mount, screams of cheering supporters reel on, fear and trepidation envelope the air. Oops...., Fred and Yinka are caught in the intrigue, they couldn’t lift off the line. Rapheal the captain of the defending quartet had already taken the lead; suddenly he tumbles as a result of a muscle pull. Artificial silence prevails over the sporting arena, for a moment and he clutches his head as it becomes obvious he couldn’t make the race any longer….A new champion has emerged as Kelechi breasted the tape alongside breaking the time record (Double achievement). During the post match hostilities, Raphael and his crew lamented their losses while Kelechi’s house kept screaming and yelling “winner oooo…, winner ooooo….” Each one of us can vividly remember such experiences as they occurred in our past lives. Without doubt, the names and even the images of such heroes and heroines creep into our visual memories. Also, we cannot deny remembering those who championed certain unfortunate scenarios (like Raphael, who seemed the undisputed winner before the failure) or causes, how some fail in spite of the time and energy they have put into a venture. Perhaps you’d like to know that amongst us are potential supporters and on lookers whose impact seems barely visible. All some of us do is become the sidewalk chatters, the analyst who do nothing but talk and gossip about the loosers’ and the winners. In fact, our commentaries are far more packaged and well researched than that of BBC or CNN! We become authorities in analyzing the failures and shortcoming of others, contributing nothing meaningful to their success or even finding something more significant to do with our time. There is a starting point to every race, there is a track to maintain, an end point to reach and the sideline for cheering supporters and indifferent onlookers. Are you amongst those who would be moved by the jeers of the crowd? If you fall, will you keep lying there and make no attempt at moving? Amongst which of these group do you belong, do you belong among the active participants or the indolent bystanders? Your sojourn in this life is just another race. For that reason, do not make yourself into an on-looker. Be involved!
