attempt to think like a baby tort.......... please. they are not puppies or kittens, they are not cows or chickens.........they are fundamentally wild animals. you are big, you have me in your hands........ what does that mean ? you are going to eat me. you put me in a box, in the dark....i can find a bit of comfort in that if i am not cold......then open the box, have me in your hands......possibly many big creatures looking at me, totally different enviorment ........... they may try to eat me. there are of course ALWAYS exceptions to this......but they are not higher thinking on a mammal level. they can become habituated.....especially sullys since they seem to make a routine of their own......but they still have a simple mind. eat, thermoregulate, drink, poop, not get eaten. Lets also for a short moment look at the stress. the baby hatches....... gets put into another container for a bit........ then shipped out to a distributor most likely......... another container........... then to the pet store..........another container....then shipped to your home via your car........another container........ then inside its new home.......another container........ then handled for soaks.......another container.......... perhaps let to wander around the floor....another container. all these containers add stress, changes the temps, humidity, the visuals, the possible threats in its own mind. take these things slow and it will adjust...habitualize itself to you and the surroundings. Why are larger animals usually seem to have less fear ?? habitualization if they are captives......... reduced chance of becoming prey if they are wild.
