attn the five people who read my wall: Columbus never saw or set foot on North America, so theres that. First voyage was to the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola, all just south of what is now called Flo-Rida, which he believed were Japan and China. Then he went back later on a second, much larger voyage and srsly didnt do anything but straight up see islands which he named, before landing on what is now Puerto Rico and then Jamaica the next year. All these places were, of course, previously inhabited, and Columbus disobeyed direct orders from the Spanish Crown not only to not enslave people but to establish loving relationships with them. Four-ish years later he went to areas in and on the South American coast, the whole time thinking it was near China. He also went to Central America apparently to try to find a passage to India. Also, Columbus day being on October 12 and a federal holiday was set up by FDR to celebrate Italian heritage or something, (which, if i were Italian, would have me severely petitioning to find a better representative of my culture who had some kind of piety, moral compass, and geographically accurate compass -that part isnt totally his fault but whatever). Other white settlers enacted the systematic attempted genocide of Indigenous peoples living in what is now the continental U.S. Its still true that Columbus enslaved indigenous people on the places he did visit, was a tyrannical governor and set up ridiculous tribute requirements of gold that would require body parts instead if unpaid, all of which did happen in the Americas, thus technically America. Kinda weird how border control these days tries to specifically keep S. Americans out of N. America which is often purported to be found by a guy that actually only found areas south of N. Americas border. Imperialism sucks. I had too much coffee. Liberty and justice for actual.
