…beautiful churches… St Mary’s Church/Chapel, Lead, Near Saxton North Yorkshire Although technically a chapel, probably for a medieval manor house that has long since disappeared, St Mary’s is usually referred to as a Church. It dates from the 14th century and was thought to have been built for the Tyas Family. Additions and restoration were carried out in the 18th century, and there may have been a chapel/church on the site from earlier times as excavations in 1934 revealed a grave slab dating from the 9th or 10th century. In the 1930s it was saved from ruin by a group of ramblers, and now has a Friends group who care for it. It is sited very close to the battle of Towton of 1461. An amazing place to visit and just sit, imaging what might have taken place within its walls… Thanks for reading :) Toni Justbod Team Information source: Wikipedia
