below is a comment made is response to a discussion on a particular site regarding use of our orisa crown names... goodness. never heard of needing to say your crown name at orisa events...where do people get this stuff? my name in Osha/Ocha is something to be proud of. it is a blessing for you, a prayer, each time that it is spoken. That concept goes along with the culture from which the orisa come where a persons birth name is the prayer attached to them at the naming ceremony that identifies them to family, ancestors and Olodumare. Laketi Oshun is a name I proudly, gratefully and happily carry. on another note, people are generally confused about Africa and its indigenous religions/cultures. Orisa worship (called santos by some because of its syncretizing with Christian denomination of Catholicism) is one of the indigenous religions from Africa. There are many others, Vodu included, which have similar practices and looks but differ in language and deity identification. we have Yoruba/orisa/Nalo/Ifa/Lukumi/Santeria here in the west, Cuba, PR, US, Brasil, Mejico...because the preponderance of enslaved Africans that came here were taken from the regions where our religion was in force, practiced, lived. We dont have a lock on this structure of worship because all of the African INDIGENOUS worship systems are hierarchically structured the same_orisa worship, Ifa worship is ONE of them. Vodu is not evil or devil connected. Traditional Africans dont believe in the devil which is associated with Abrahamic religions...Judaism, Islam, Christianity. people need to research what they involve themselves in and practice so that it is done with as much clarity as possible. I made Orisa and I am a child of Oshun who was never a Roman Catholic saint. its time to be clear and not continue telling the history as though a phase of it ( persecution under Christian slavers) is the root of it because it most certainly is not.
