briefly this is a tip of THE JONAM KOC-CHIEFDOM (KER KOC) INTRODUCTION the present Luo speaking people of east Africa belong to the group of Nilotics called River-Lake Nilotics. In Uganda they are the JONAM, ACHOLI, ALUR, KUMAM, and JOP ADHOLA. In Kenya and Tanzania they are known as LUO. before examining KOC Luo which is the focus of this history, it is important therefore to take note of the followinf points about Lwo speaking group of tribes in general: THAT:- 1- The original home of the Luo ethenic group of tribes was at WAU County around Bahrel-Ghazel in southern Sudan. Generally they were calld LWO WAU. 2- through their period of movement and settlements btw 14th and 17th centuries (1350-1650 A.D.) the migration took the large and small groups according to the clan and always in the same directions. The way each clan or tribe came to be called by different names, the origin of such names can be traced and understood. 3- The name with which LWO speaking tribes in Uganda in particular call themselves now, emerged as a result of their social political interaction with the natives they found. For example, the legendary Gipir and Tiful groups intermarried with the LENDU and KEBU to produce the present ALUR tribe of OKORO and PADYERE. while the KOC-Lwo clans who came and settled along the East and West of the Nile got their name JONAM according to their geographical settlement and activities along the Nile. They became known as The JONAM (River Dweller). The Jonam are the original descendants of the LWOWAU. Unlike the Alur who are the by-product of Lwo, Kebu and the Lendu. 4- The land which the Lwo tribes in Uganda have occupied now were not vacant. The present Nebbi district was inhabited by the Lendu, Kebu and the madi tribes. These Lendu and Kebu are still distinct tribe in Nebbi though they live as segmentary societies among the Alur in Okoro, but they are the natives (Wegi-ngom) proper. There would therefore be no justification for any LWO speaking tribe or product of Lwo and Sudanic group claiming Nebbi District as their in any case the first Lwo group to cross the nile and Settled was the KOC Lwo group of Abok and kisambu who settled 40 miles north of lake Albert in a place now called MUTIR in wadelai. 5- While it is true that the Lwo had love for the institution of divine kingship or Chieftaincy, they never formed KINGDOMS that led to the same rigid hierarchical structure of society like that of the Banyoro, Buganda, Basoga and toro, nor did they have KINGS as their leaders.
