cannabinoids may have a protective effect against the development - TopicsExpress

cannabinoids may have a protective effect against the development of certain types of tumors Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death. By no means a cure - but something in marijuana selectively targets and kills cancer cells - surely a promising discovery. If only it were not regarded / classified as having no known medical use there could be far more research being done. Various cannabinoids (both natural and synthetic) have a wide range of effects in the lab: * Triggering cell death, through a mechanism called apoptosis * Stopping cells from dividing * Preventing new blood vessels from growing into tumours * Reducing the chances of cancer cells spreading through the body, by stopping cells from moving or invading neighbouring tissue * Speeding up the cell’s internal ‘waste disposal machine’ – a process known as autophagy – which can lead to cell death A single plant does all of this, but it has no known medical value? scienceblog.cancerresearchuk.org/2012/07/25/cannabis-cannabinoids-and-cancer-the-evidence-so-far/ cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/cannabis/healthprofessional/page4
