checking out a mattress is to rest on it for three to five minutes. Provided you sleep with a partner, have him/her try it with you. It won’t be the same to lay on it alone as it’s with someone else. Then find the best fit for you, or both of you. Spring mattresses are regularly used in the majority of homes. It’s suggested that you turn your mattress around, or flip it over, every few months; this will help with its longevity. If you sense that your mattress sinks in the middle, and/or it’s very short, you can put a board under it. In case it’s too firm, you can put padding of soft foam upon it. Be attentive to the way you are feeling as you go to sleep and wake up afterwards. An indication that it’s time to get a new mattress is if you are getting aches and pains, or you’re suddenly having trouble settling in at night. Also, take into account the age of your mattress and whether you have recently moved it around. Having an aged mattress might indicate it is time to go get a new one. If it’s been in the same spot for a long time, adjusting it (turning it or flipping it over) can make a difference. Fluctuating body weight changes may influence the level of comfort you feel in your mattress. Also, do not ignore the pillow. The support for your whole body is important, but support for your head and neck is equally so. The alignment between you body and your head is a major factor to take into consideration. Your head and your upper back should remain at the same level as you lay on you back; sideways, your head and your lower back should remain at the same level. The material of your pillow should be supportive, as well. Although many pillows seem to be full, it can actually be of a squashy, soft material, making it so any weight will lead it to sink in. Pillows that are too stiff will cause a strain on your back. Your chest and lower back regions become aligned with your back and head regions when you are properly being supported. Keeping in mind that you’ll find no ideal mattress or pillow for everyone, you’ll have to test out a few to get your perfect one. But contact a chiropractor if you’re still having difficulty sleeping due to aches or discomfort, so you can get advice on treatment or on sleeping better. Back to Featured Article
