PNEUMONIA IS a major problem in children, especially those younger than 5 years, accounting for up to 5 million deaths each year in developing countries. In North America, the annual incidence of pneumonia ranges from 30 to 45 cases per 1000 children in those younger than 5 years to 16 to 22 cases per 1000 children in those aged 5 years and older. A subgroup of these children suffer from recurrent pneumonia, raising the question of whether there is an underlying illness predisposing them to such pneumonia recurrences.
