continuing on what i presented a couple weeks ago on setting up parameters for yourself due to time constraints when performing improvised music outside of the practice setting: at the advice of morton subotnick, i organized all the sets of sampler accompaniments that create the canvases or environments that i improvise within my half hour set. its clearly set up to look like the original logic file from which it came from, but im keeping my laptop closed and using only my midi controller and this map in terms of sampler control. the legend up top indicates that there are multiple samples per canvas, sometimes as many as five. so although ive set up general time constraints and an official order of chronology for the samples, i havent determined the order or specific points of entrance for any of the samples within the canvas. rather, ive just drawn a general contour line to illustrate the shape of the movement. on top of the line are general notes for the types of improvisation i would perform vocally, though these issues of improvised vocal performance are best dealt with on the fly, for me personally at least. i know myself and my primary instrument, my voice, and its limits, because its a part of my body. the sampler, or computer, as an instrument, however, is limitless, thus making it an alien, less instinctual improvising tool to many. so by creating these time and structure parameters for myself, i save myself the embarassment of going up on stage with 20 samples and no idea when i should bring them in when i really should be focusing on my vocal solos. the computer/sampler/electronics in general are my accompaniment, they are my band. and you gotta keep your band in check if you want to shred with confidence and ease. if you wanna hear how this sounds, come out to check out this set and Konrad Kamms set, respectively, on thursday night at Glass Frog, Max Alper, Pinkbabyhead @ Alphabet Lounge.
