few artists have embodied the contradictions as poignantly and dramatically as Wagner; one comes away with such cliches- as these are the contradictions to which man is heir, or , we all, even the greatest have our flaws, o we all have feet of clay... And yet; I think artists of deep feeling and talent, such as Wagner, (or Bach, even) would recoil and associations made between them and racist, anti semitism. I think they would say- You misunderstand. I think they would posit music as one of the highest arts- rising above the fray- an ideal- capable of, as Beethoven hoped, changing the world. And when they saw actual links between their words and the shallow world of politics? They would apologize profusely- they would acknowledge their mistakes. They would agree with Ann Frank- we all, in the end, lean forward.
