frances ----------- Rangers: Two seasons of woe in the cups Published on the 05 August 2013 ALLY McCoist has now seen his Rangers side dumped out of an embarrassing eight cups in just over two seasons during his spell as manager. The Ibrox boss watched his men crash to a 2-1 defeat to Forfar Athletic at Station Park in the League Cup. And it was the latest in a long line of Cup calamities for McCoist since he took charge as manager two summers ago. Last season, Rangers were eliminated from the League Cup by Caley Thistle, the Ramsdens Cup by Queen of the South and followed that up with a Scottish Cup thumping at Dundee United. And, in his first campaign as manager, McCoist saw his team bundled out of four Cup competitions. They lost to Malmo in the Champions League, Maribor in the Europa League, Falkirk in the League Cup and Dundee United again in the Scottish Cup. That season, Rangers played six games in cups and didn’t win a game. Last term, Rangers played in 11 cup ties and managed eight wins over Brechin City, East Fife, Falkirk twice, Motherwell, Forres Mechanics, Alloa and Elgin City. The Ibrox boss has now never gone further in a cup as manager than a quarter-final and that was in the Ramsdens Cup, when Queen of the South beat them in a penalty shoot-out. McCoist has now been in charge for 19 cup games and has managed just nine wins. Meanwhile, he has been slashed to just evens to be the first manager in his league to be axed. Scottish firm McBookie have slashed him from 7-1 to even money in their League One sack race. Spokesman Paul Petrie said: “McCoist’s comments have shown that Ibrox isn’t big enough for [him and Charles Green]. It looks like it’s coming to a head and Rangers crashing out of yet another cup competition in such a timid manner won’t have helped McCoist’s cause.”
