from Gayleen Hays: I am writing to STRONGLY OPPOSE Naval plans for a permanent (or even temporary) Electromagnetic warfare training range on the western half of the Olympic Peninsula. I live on the Olympic Peninsula and love the wild lands of the Olympic National Park, National Forest and state DNR lands, as well as the coastal beaches. The peace and quiet and enjoyment of these lands would be seriously impacted by the presence and NOISE of jets from Whidbey Naval Air Station, especially if the jets are EA18-G Growlers. I am aware of the impact of jet noise on the people of Whidbey Island and the San Juan Islands. The Growler noise impact has been deafening and devastating. I do not want the environmental, mental and emotional impact from outrageous decibel levels to be allowed on the Olympic Peninsula, especially within noise range of the Olympic National Park, the crown jewel of the peninsula. This impact on tourism which is a life-blood of the peninsula would be devastating. Tourists from all over the world visit the peninsula in order to enjoy peace and quiet and beauty. Jet noise will have a huge and negative impact on return visits. The Navy must disclose, by example of jet flights in scheduled fly-overs, what the actual noise impact will be so that the citizens of the Olympic Peninsula understand what it is the Navy intends in terms of number of daily flights and the duration of fly overs. We must understand by experiencing the impact in order to clearly state our concerns. I am also concerned about the impact of electromagnetic transmitting towers. For the regional Forest Service staff to sign off on this project without requiring an EIS feels to be collusion with the Navy rather than protection of the public and public interest on public lands. How will these transmitting towers and their electromagnetic emissions impact humans and non-human species? This must be fully disclosed through an EIS. I request to be kept informed of all avenues of public comment. This naval plan for an Electronic Warfare Range on the peninsula must be stopped. Living on the beach has demonstrated clearly how even the slightest change in environment affects the behavior of the animals which depend upon their habitat to survive. Gayleen Hays
