from JS: REHEARSAL REPORT day #3 - after two days of song arranging today we tried the first set list. ali and i took 2 hours last night. there are a lot of songs and about 5 threads to bind the macaroni. the set list was good in theory but nothing tells you as much as playing the songs against each other. the first two songs worked, then we had to throw away the set list and inch our way forward one song at a time. after a song, sometimes wed sit in silence trying to discern what was so uncomfortable. or wed shout yes! peoples foreheads would contract, faces become grey and waxen, eyes staring at nothing as we all used our bodies as barometers. sequencing a concert or cd is very similar to editing film. composed across time rather than space (a painting or photo). you can make or break something by what comes before or after. you can energize or drain. yes, all things have an opportunity to nourish or vampirize . even places for audience clapping are required for the storytelling. too many segues can irritate everyones system including performers. flipside: too many songs with their beginning and ending energies intact can be too many mountains climbed. by lunch our brains were mush and i was the only one who didnt have the good sense to leave. i re-wrote the set list according to our mornings work and we continued on after lunch going through different states of focus, dehydration, tiredness, giddiness, excellence and it was to our great relief the children got home from school and flooded into the studio to hug their father and listen to us. this, of course, made us behave.
