from Steve Newton via Steve Newton for 22nd District State Representative I continue to argue that if we are going to fix Wilmington then we have to change one particular intellectual stumbling block that keeps us from succeeding. We have to stop using our resources to create programs to help out people in the city, because this is premised on the idea that poor urban people somehow cannot think for themselves and make rational decisions. Instead, I argue, we need to see those people have direct access to resources (without the intervention of government middle men) and that we prune back or eliminate the rules, policies, and regulations that, for their own good, prevent the urban poor from running their own lives. Part of the failure to comprehend this road to improving cities and eliminating policies is the shared stereotype between far-right conservatives and far-left progressives that African-Americans in our cities (especially the men) are not among the deserving poor because theyve created a culture of welfare and violence. While Im not usually a fan of Ta-Nehisi Coates, this piece nails it: http
