from the ongoing project stories from my life for Liisa Liisa Chisholm and Mary Ashcroft . story 3. how to survive on a bare minimum in foggy germany. winter 2006 i went on a fellowship to the furtherst southern point of germany, located on a lake and on the border to switzerland. it was my first time staying away from home and it lasted 6 months. i was a pretty feral child, though being 20 years of age. my main problem was cooking. i was incapable of it. the only thing i knew were spaghetti. here are some notes on survival. 1) everyone can cook spaghetti. 2) they taste better with salt (took me 2 weeks to figure this out). 3) they taste better with ketchup (another 2 weeks). 4) they taste better with roasted onions (a hint from my uzbek friend from kazakhstan, a far too complex recepy for me). 5) you can survive on bare spaghettis, you will lose fat and muscles, your ribs will be visible. 6) collect apples. on a night trip in the environs of my university i discovered apple trees. i used an 75 liter backpack to gather them, while the nightstorm unfolded. a 2-meter-long table was covered with them. i wasnt an eager fan of apples, so i gave them away on every occasion someone was visiting me. the vastness of apples impressed people and my image of a weirdo sky-roceted. (the foundations for it were laid, when i organised a trip for 8 people to the concentration camp of dachau and made a slight logistic mistake. the mistake resulted in a march through the fields in the night, the discovery of rain-soaked lamas on a farm and a massive intake of brandy.) 7) collect friends. female friends are the best source of tasty food. the right timing is crucial. my jewish friend svetlana was giving me the food, when discovering it contained pork (and the label claimed otherwise). i started learning swedish in a tandem, because it was a fun way to get food. i gave massages to a jehovah witness-girl, because she always had tee. there were many more friends. and i am grateful. 8) once i pillaged a farm-field in the night. i brought some cauliflower and maize, but noone was able to cook it, so wwe gathered in the kitchen and gnawed on the greenish stubs of corn. it was halloween, so i also stole a pumpkin head in a nearby castle. noone was able to cook it either. it spent some time in the oven though. 9) spaghetti have an expiry date and once they get near it, the price gets reduced. time to stack up! 10) if you are fed up with spaghetti, try toast bread slices with nutella.
