had a thought about working on these air cooled machines as i was working on my ducati project tonight. i have to tell you all something -- if those of you who know how to work on these magnificent machines dont pass down the knowledge to those who dont, whole generations of knowledge will be lost for sure -- you may be the last folks to know anything. working on these machines is not about reading service bulletins and replacing parts -- buying a new bike each year and throwing the old one away. its about pulling delicate components apart while crossing your fingers and clenching your rabbits foot, hoping they wont break (and shedding a tear when they do). its about doing what you can with what youve got access to. its about balancing budget, time, and patience. its about learning why motorcycles are what they are today, by understanding what they were yesterday. its about running your hands along something that was shaped by a persons loving hands and not by a computer. its about admiring the beauty and simplicity of these fire-breathing machines. its about seeing the imperfections in the metal and the machine and accepting them for what they are -- uniqueness. its about breathing life into something that for all intensive purposes looks dead. there are many from this group aiding me on my journey. they know i have to learn, suffer, and make mistakes, but they share in my small victories and encourage me to trudge on. so, for those of you who are selflessly sharing your knowledge, in those few minutes when youre not scratching out a living, THANK YOU! I will most definitely be paying it forward. i am in you debt for the sharing of your most valuable knowledge.
