had an amazing week in NYC and saw a whopping 9 shows while i was out there. for anyone who may be interested, here is my list of the best and some of my thoughts. truly, i didnt see a thing i didnt like, so even the lowest on the list i would still recommend to anyone. #1. Heathers - The Musical - this was the most unexpected on the list to me. i hadnt really planned on seeing it and it was on my last night in town when i had decided to take it easy after running around like a joyful gypsy with a big murse for two days. but i loved it. it was hilarious and campy and touching. i laughed, i cried, i jumped to my feet when it was over. it was their first preview (or actually what the director, who made a curtain speech at the top of the show, told us was more of a Final Dress Rehearsal due to the night before truly being a Tech Rehearsal) and they were on fire. the crowd was on fire and the lead Heather (Chandler) was sick so her understudy was on. she was absolutely perfect...she looked exactly like the gal in the movie and had an incredible performance. i also really loved the girl who played Veronica (a lil more Lizzy Caplan than Winona) and the music was catchy and fabulous. i really was moved by it and hope that it takes off! #2. ROCKY Broadway - i havent seen the film of this, but my husband loves it and therefore i think it must be pretty good. but it was a truly awesome experience. the last 20 minutes are a true powerhouse and one of the coolest things youll see in a big ol broadway show. the music was very pretty and when that beautiful man would start to sing over it with his beautiful voice, it would make my eyes tear for sure. numerous times. it was so so good. #3. Bullets Over Broadway - well, that was just DeLiGhTfUl! i said immediately after the show (it was the first preview). and it was. colorful and perky and hilarious, it was just a joy to watch. we laughed so freaking hard throughout and the three main gals were the true stars to me. zach braff was fine but its the least flashy of all the roles. it was super good. #4. Mothers and Sons on Broadway - oh man, i loved this little play so much. i had heard mixed opinions from people i knew, but ended up falling in love with it. Tyne Daly was a powerhouse and i cant count how many times i cried throughout it. i think it is a cool little play dealing with lots of modern feelings about the feelings about AIDS today, about gay marriage and adoption, and family secrets. i wasnt particularly thrilled with the ending of it, but it was more of a directorial thing as opposed to a script thing i think. #5. Bayside The Musical - a Saved by the Bell musical? ummmm, you cant go wrong. we sat in the front row Caffeine Pill Spalsh Zone and Jessie Spano motorboated me. we had so much freaking fun. i seriously hope we can do it at The Ringwald Theatre one of these days. The Jessie and Slater were my faves but the true standout being the fiercely hilarious actor who played all of the other guy parts (and some of the girls, too). #6. Love & Information (@ the New York Theatre Workshop) - a cool new little Caryl Churchill play that had probably about 50 vignettes all independent of one another with about ten actors split into seven numbered sections that i began to realize all dealt with a similar sort of theme: miscommunication, secrets, how information is transferred/received...but i would love to really spend some time with the script. some of the scenes were 20 seconds and others were 8 minutes or so. the acting was amazing and i was moved to tears on many occasions because of the honesty (and i saw it super close in the front row). a totally freaking cool play i would love to do some day. #7. Ode to Joy (by the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater) - this new Craig Lucas play dealt with a womans addictions and relationships over a couple decades. it was really lovely and funny and heartbreaking. it was my first show of the week and a great way to start my week off. the trio of actors were fabulous and some of the shows wildest moments (a drunk girl puking on a guy while going in for a kiss, a couple falling down and into a shattered glass on the floor full with blood and cringing as they crunched around in it. #8. The Realistic Joneses - i was soooo excited to see the opening night preview of this play. and it was fun when it felt that it had a similar vibe to Detroit that i did last year at the berry. but i was left saying well, that was an odd little play and not really sure what i just watched. but it was good. and marisa tomei was who shined the most to me. she was lovely and just so so good. the rest of the cast was good with Tracy Letts giving the most honest and frank performance of the night. I saw Sleep No More NYC last year so i didnt include it in my list above. it was just as cool as last year and i saw a ton of stuff i didnt last time. but it was only after the second time that everyone was talking about the candy in the candy shop that you could eat. i want some candy! :) it was awesome. and i still highly rec it to anyone who likes to be a little adventurous and really be a part of an experience rather than just being an observer. it harvested even further my desire to do an immersive project and one started to hatch this weekend. so im hoping to be able to scult that out as my senior project next year. so thee ya go, if youve seen any of these, i would love to know your thoughts, too! cant wait for next year!
