happy easter from the nurburgring. today was all about practice and qualifying for drift cup 2014 at the nurburgring. i think i learned all there is to know about agricultural racing today. i went for rides in two cars and during our laps we became intimate with FIA gravel traps. the first one we were able to drive out of, but the second one we stuck the landing. pretty sure we scored well with the olympic judges. the weather today, like yesterday was mostly sunny, a little wind, but very pleasant. close to 60 cars were vying for the 44 spots open for the competition. this course is amazing. there is a long uphill with a left/right turn that requires a very long drift. once at the end of this section, there is a sharp right hairpin leading to a steep section with a left turn at the end. very challenging. each driver got three runs and it was interesting seeing the different lines and approaches that were taken. one of the announcers took me to the bar at the hotel at the grand prix circuit. it overlooks the race control tower and starting grid. what a place. the proprietor (josef) has been there for 48 years, and has collected racing memorabilia for almost that long. drivers from all the racing series that use this track have signed the walls and pictures there. every square in of this place is covered, even the ceiling. a most interesting man to talk too. when i got back to the drift track it was time for a drivers meeting where the top 44 were announced. after that we drove to a small village in the shadows of the green hell. i saw this place very briefly yesterday when on my hot lap there. i finally got my first taste of wiener schnitzel. it was absolutely worth the wait. this has been a trip of great fun and camaraderie. a finer group of people couldnt be found any where. tomorrow we find out who the champion is. stay tuned.......
