... he hauled himself over the edge of the cliff, watching the bridge fall behind him. Close call. But how would he get back now, to the ones on the other side of the abyss? The ones that told him not to go this way, the bridge couldnt handle his weight. As the emptiness fell over him like a wet blanket, he sat, legs dangling, on the edge. His gaze was drawn downward, watching the last pieces fall into the blackness. As the pieces disappeared into the void, he stood up. Stretched. Yawned. And picked up the hatchet. He needed wood and cordage. He took a deep breath, gathered himself, and walked into the forest. The growl of a bear set his teeth on edge. Nothing without sacrifice, he thought. And swung into the first pine ...
