he presidents of Venezuela and Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega and Nicolas Maduro, declared themselves ready to welcome the former U.S. intelligence consultant Edward Snowden sought by Washington for disclosing confidential information about the electronic espionage practiced by the United States worldwide, announced the agency AVN. "The President of the Republic Nicolas Maduro offered asylum to Edward Snowden," reads a news agency. Nicaraguan President also agreed to grant political asylum to the computer. After confirming that he had received a request from Mr. Snowden, Daniel Ortega said there would respond "with pleasure if circumstances permit." The WikiLeaks site has previously published a list of 21 countries that Mr. Snowden had requested political asylum. These include Germany, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Spain, Ecuador, Finland, France, the India, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Nicaragua, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Switzerland and Venezuela. A large number of countries have already approached refused to grant whistleblower status of political refugee. WikiLeaks also said Friday that Mr. Snowden has submitted applications for asylum to six other countries. Their names were not mentioned "in order not to expose them to the risk of interference from the United States.
