They consist of photovoltaic (PV) modules, an inverter, array wiring, DC and AC disconnects, and mounting structures to secure the modules on the roof. The solar array gathers sunlight and turns it in to direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter changes the DC to alternating current electricity (AC) and this AC energy is usable in your home. The AC power supplements the supply of energy coming from your utility company. This solar system is grid-tied, and that means that the utility company is still your primary provider of energy. You will not notice a shortage of energy at night or on cloudy days. You will however, see a decrease in your energy bills. A grid-tie solar system offsets your use of electricity instead of replacing the utility company. To ensure the best price for your solar system, make sure to look for the many rebates available. It is easiest to start with local rebates. Many utility companies offer rebates for your system, some ranging as high as $3.00 per watt. Then, depending on which state you live in, there may be state rebates or credits available. Finally, there is currently (2010) a 30 federal tax credit (not a rebate) available. (Consult your professional tax preparer for conditions of the credit.)
