https://thunderclap.it/projects/17756-freeajstaff We ask all of you who value a free press to join us on October 24 in saying Journalism is Not a Crime #FreeAJStaff — and putting pressure on the Egyptian criminal justice system to correct this abhorrent injustice. On December 29, 2013, Egyptian authorities arrested Al Jazeera journalists Peter Greste, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed in their hotel room in Cairo, detaining them on charges of supporting the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. The journalists had simply been doing their job. During a long, bemusing trial, prosecutors did not present one shred of legitimate evidence to support the claims against them, or to prove the journalists had been anything but ethical, balanced and professional in their work. If anything, the farcical proceedings only underscored the political nature of these charges. But disbelief turned to outrage, when in June, the three journalists were convicted and sentenced. Greste and Fahmy received 7 years while Mohamed received 10 years. The journalists’ lawyers have filed for appeal, and are currently waiting for the date for the hearings to begin.
