https://youtube/watch?v=aoozdhcrIK8 The great (and famous) moment in this interview occurs about 12 minutes in, where he contrasts his own approach to performing Mahler with that of Bruno Walter- he describes Walter as a moralist and himself as an immoralist. This is amusing, but the key to this is later in the interview, when he says that he liked to read Nietzsche. Given this, I suspect that Klemperer was thinking in terms of what we usually translate from Nietzsche as amoral, and that for Walter, moralist was an euphemism for hypocrite. Interestingly, Klemperer comes across as very natural, conversational, unpretentious and unguarded. This is in direct contrast to Walter who is formal, and, although pleasant in manner, is both guarded and distant. Everything Walter said in public sounded pre-planned. Interesting, on so many levels!
