Amazing that by the age of 22 he had chalked up enough excellent songs to inspire the Beatles (who covered this song and others) the Rolling Stones (Not Fade Away was their first top five hit in the UK, peaking at number 3) and many others, such as Mud (Their cover of Oh Boy was No 1 in the UK) and Peter & Gordon (Their cover of True Love Ways was a British No 2). Not only that, but to inspire a film and give it its title song (Thatll be the Day). The list goes on and on. What could he have achieved in another 5-10 years? A quiet, well-behaved yet innovative singer/songwriter/musician who nevertheless managed to inspire many of the greats that followed.
